THE SIN OF PRESUMPTION
“That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.” (Philippians 3:10 KJV)
One of the subtle yet dangerous ways the devil comes at us is through the sin of presumption. From a spiritual perspective, presumption is the assumption that we have a right to God’s favour or salvation based on our own efforts, merit or understanding. It is a dangerous self-deception that can lead us away from a true relationship with Christ.
In our opening scripture, we see that Paul’s desire reveals a deep yearning to truly know Christ. Paul’s pursuit of God was not just to have knowledge of Him, but to develop an intimate and transformative relationship anchored on the power of Christ’s resurrection. This is what reveals a heart of genuine faith: constantly yearning and thirsting after Christ while acknowledging your total dependence on Him.
To presume upon God’s grace is to take this divine relationship for granted. It is to assume that your strength, status or position can somehow secure a place for you in His presence. This is contrary to the very essence of the gospel of Christ, which proclaims that salvation is by grace alone through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Truly seek to know God for who He is, and let Him see in you how smitten you are in His love for you.
