THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow Me.” (Matthew 16:24 NIV)

The call to discipleship is not just an invitation to follow Jesus; it’s a call to transformation. Jesus doesn’t just want us to admire Him from a distance; He wants us to walk in His footsteps, to live as He lived, and to love as He loved.

When Jesus called His first disciples, He asked them to leave behind their livelihoods, their comfort, and their security. He asked them to trust Him with their future, even when the path ahead was unclear. This same call echoes to us today. Discipleship requires a willingness to surrender our own desires and ambitions, and to embrace the life that Jesus offers—a life marked by self-denial, service, and sacrifice.

Taking up our cross daily means choosing to put Jesus first, even when it’s hard, even when it costs us something. It means letting go of our own plans and allowing God’s will to shape our lives. This might seem daunting, but Jesus promises that in losing our lives for His sake, we will find true life.

As we respond to the call of discipleship, we discover the beauty of a life lived for Christ. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. Each step of obedience deepens our relationship with Him and brings us closer to His heart.
