DEVELOPING SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE

“But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.” (1 Timothy 4:7 KJV)

As a believer, maintaining your spiritual life requires discipline just as maintaining physical fitness requires the discipline of training. The disciplines are prayer, fasting, bible study, meditation, etc. They create space in your crowded life for God to speak to you and for the Holy Spirit to guide you. Without intentional practice, spiritual growth will only remain accidental and inconsistent.

When you discipline yourself spiritually, your spiritual life will receive a boost. However, discipline requires commitment and patience. Read your bible, pray, fast, sing to the Lord as often as possible. Your goal is to reach out to God, because God wants to reach out to you more than you can imagine.

Before you know it, as you continue in the path of spiritual discipline, it becomes delight, and something you look forward to everyday. The daily habits and practices no longer become burdensome but joyful. As you exercise yourself unto godliness, you will find that the Holy Spirit meets your efforts, producing in you a life that bears fruit even when you are not striving. Discipline yourself spiritually!

Scripture for the day

Psalm 1:1-2 KJV

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Confession

I exercise myself unto godliness through intentional spiritual disciplines. I delight myself in God’s Word daily, in Jesus’ Name.

Prophetic Prayers
