FIRM FOUNDATIONS

“For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” (Hebrews 11:10 KJV)

Abraham is regarded as the Father of faith and the bible said that this faith was counted unto him as righteousness. One of the key events in Abraham’s life that required great faith was the conception of the promised child by Sarah, who at the time she eventually gave birth to Isaac, was past the age of child-bearing.

For a moment, Sarah thought the promise was just about the outcome of having a child and persuaded Abraham to go into her maidservant, Haggai, who gave birth to Ishmael. The attendant repercussions and ultimate arrival of Isaac as God had said had made Abraham and Sarah to understand it was not about the outcome but the process.

In Hebrews 11, even after arriving in the promised land, Abraham sought for a city with a foundation whose builder and maker is God. It was more about who built the foundation rather than whether there was a city. That is why the Bible In Psalm 127:1 says, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it:” (they will build something but in vain). We must seek to see the hand of God in all we do and that concerns us even when the outcome is a positive one.
